Letterbook, 1828 Nov - 1833 Nov.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of copies of about 700 letters concerning the business affairs of the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, the art exhibition hall which Lackington owned and managed. Most of the letters concern negotiations to rent various rooms for exhibitions, including discussions about prices, availability, size, and suitability for the works of art to be placed there. Other letters mention sales of art from the exhibitions, or lack thereof; one letter to Monsieur Le Thiere assuring him his painting had been shipped to France and expressing his disappointment that it did not sell while in the Egyptian Hall; another letter to Monsieur Le Jeunes advises him not to bring out his new picture just yet, and discusses the placement of a fireplace in one of the exhibition rooms. Many of the final letters in the collection concern the failure of one of the exhibitors to pay his rent, and Lackington's attempts to sell or rent the Hall as a residential space.
